Maxi Cosi Cabrio - Move Aside Peg Perego

Just when we thought we already decided on the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio carseat, a new wrinkle surfaced. I was reading how Greg at Daddy Types decided on his carseat and realized that we overlooked one big issue for the Peg Perego - the need to have a carseat base installed. It just wasn't realistic for us to carry the carseat base with us whenever we wanted to take a cab in NYC.
In its place, we chose to go with the Maxi Cosi Cabrio. We were willing to deal with the risk that it is not certified in the U.S. (if it can even be considered a risk since EU standards are actually more rigorous). After doing some digging, I found two places that will ship to the U.S. at relatively reasonable costs: Two Left Feet in the U.K. and kiddies24 in Germany. If you buy from kiddies24, they will also refund the VAT that's included in the list price.
We ordered our Maxi Cosi Cabrio from Two Left Feet, which arrived in less than 1 week. Michelle at Two Left Feet was very helpful and very resposnive with all my questions. Also available at Lullabys in London.

What have your experiences been with the Maxi Cosi Cabrio? Does it really not need a base?
We love it. It's a piece of cake to strap in and feels very sturdy.
I see these sites also sell the CabrioFix -- do you know what the difference is? I couldn't tell from the Maxi Cosi website as it only lists the Fix and not the regular Cabrio.
The CabrioFix is basically a base that you can put and leave in the car. It ensures that the carseat is properly positioned (in case you have doubts about strapping it in).
Is it a problem that the car seat is not certified? Is it illegal? Could we drive it out of the hospital?
Does it feel less sturdy to have no base?
Thanks very much
I'm in no position to comment on whether it's legal or not nor am I making a recommendation that you buy the Maxi Cosi Cabrio.
That said, we do feel that our little one in very safe in the car seat, base or no base. For those who prefer to have a base, the CabrioFix is available.
We got our Maxi Cosi from Germany a few years ago- before they started becoming available more easily. My husband was a major gear junkie so "we had to have it". At first I was bothered by having to buckle it in the seatbelt everytime, but then I got used to it and it seemed even better than others b/c I knew how to get it into any car, cab, etc. They did let us fly with it, but there is no tag on it like the ones from the US. But, ultimately, isn't it better to have a seat than none at all? Overall- LOVED this carseat and used it for our second child as well. We always get comments on it and how cool it is.
