The SUV (No, Make That the Hummer) of Strollers

Mountain Buggy Urban Double Stroller

Back in July 2005, when I read the story about how the Mountain Buggy Urban Double Stroller from New Zealand may have saved a 7-month-old girl from a building collapse in NYC, I didn't pay any additional attention to the product. After all, I didn't even have a baby then so why would a double stroller be in my consideration set.

Just a couple days ago, my sister-in-law emailed me to shower praise on the MBUD. When a mother of four speaks, I listen. According to her, "it [MBUD] kicks the Peg Perego's and Maclaren's ass." The fact that each side is independently adjustable means that her newborn and toddler can ride all over town together. It has also become the cult baby gear to have for the chic moms in New Orleans.

Some other positive features of the MBUD include:
- narrow enough width to fit through a standard-sized door (This seems such a basic requirement that I'm not sure what the manufacturers of other double strollers are thinking.)
- allows for almost full recline for infants (15 degrees off horizontal)
- air-filled wheels make for a comfortable ride
- the 2 swivel wheels upfront make the stroller very stable and easy to push

The main drawback that I've read/heard about the MBUD is its high price ($600+). However, even at this price, it's still cheaper than the Bugaboo I own. So despite not being in the market for one, her ringing endorsement, along with all the positive reviews I've read elsewhere, motivated me to pen a review of the MBUD here.

If you have a tough time convincing your S.O. to bite the bullet on the MBUD, just have him/her read this article: Posh stroller may have saved baby's life (Newsday.com).
