Rocking Chairs for the Urban Grown Ups

Back when my wife was still pregnant (was that really only 6 weeks ago?), we debated whether to get a rocking chair for the apartment. We didn't want the popular gliders since those reminded us too much of old people rockers. Our tiny apartment also made big upholstered rockers unrealistic(as comfy and cool as the Storytime Rocker may be). So at the time, the options we considered were the 'oh so hip' Eames Arm Shell Rocker and the Tom Rock Rocking Chair. After test driving both, however, my wife rejected them as not being comfortable enough (though I remember her saying they felt like they may tip over).

Sleepytime Rocker

For those of us in space-constrained apartments who still hold out hopes of a cozy rocking chair, Nurseryworks rolled out in January a new upholstered option that's actually fit for the urban lifestyle, the Sleepytime Rocker. This new rocker is 5" narrower than the Storytime Rocker but 10" higher for you to rest your weary head. You can choose between 5 cotton canvas fabrics, 5 microsuede fabric colors, and 2 felt fabrics as well as two wooden base colors.

Ralph Rapson's Rapid Rocker Moderno Rocker

For the design purists who want a retro modern piece, consider the Rapson Rapid Rocker or the Moderno Rocker. The bent wood Rapid Rocker was first built by Raph Rapson, a young architect / designer who, like the Eameses, gained notice from the Case Study House project, for the Museum of Modern Art in 1939 and sold as part of the Knoll 'Rapson Line' in 1948. The Moderno Rocker, on the other hand, was designed by Yrjö Kukkkapuro in 1959-60 and now brought back in re-production. The Moderno Rocker is available in an astounding 101 colors.

So boys, if you want to score some points with your wives, plunk down the money for a good rocking chair. She and the baby will love you for it.

Both the Sleepytime Rocker and the Rapson Rapid Rocker are available at Zac and Zoe. The Moderno Rocker is available at Sparkability.

For those of you who are considering the Nurseryworks Sleepytime Rocker: we just ordered it, and were disappointed. Here's why: It does not rock very much - you have to keep kicking the floor with one foot everytime it comes forward, otherwise it stops (!); I have sat in better rockers, that rock more, and rock smoothly; the microsuede has a very bad smell. Overall, for the price, it is not worth it. If you know where to find the Moderno rocker in the picture above - as Sparkability no longer has it on their site - we'll appreciate some info.

I agree with Anonymous who must have been up late with the baby.
I sat on the Sleepytime Rocker and found that it does not rock very much and was not too cushy.
